Free iTunes

Did that title catch your attention?   Well, it caught mine too, which is why I decided to buy a Switch2Health Replay.

It’s a small computer that’s worn during exercise or other physical activity, and it provides codes for exercise, which can be redeemed for rewards.    I tried to get one for free to review on the blog, but apparently you have to have A LOT more readers than we do to get free stuff :)   I did get a discount on it though, so I guess it never hurts to ask :)

The Switch2Health Replay costs $20 plus shipping, and based on other reviews I have read online, it will take 44 hours of activity to earn back $20 in iTunes rewards.   There is no membership fee and no expiration date, so once I reach that break-even point, it’s free rewards the rest of the time!

It comes with a silicone bad to house the computer chip, but it can also be removed from the band.  I will probably try to find some way to attach this to my Garmin, or my shoe so I don’t have to always wear the band.

The Switch2Health provides a code for every 60 minutes of activity, and that code is then entered online.    I tried it out on my 4 mile run on Tuesday, which was around 50 minutes.  I wore the band the rest of the day hoping it would pick up the additional 10 minutes of exercise throught the day,  but I actually had to do purposeful arm movements for about 10 minutes to get the code.  This thing is smart!

Only one code can be entered online each day, so my goal right now is to earn one code a day.  It will be easy on my running days, but I am not sure if I will be able to do it on my rest days.

Also, I felt like a total nerd running with my Garmin on one wrist, and this band on the other wrist.  Plus I was wearning my Camelbak and listening to my iPod.  I don’t know if I could find any more gadgets if I tried!

Do you like to purchase gadgets?  Some of them are a waste of money, but I think this will be a good, solid investment!

Self Diagnosis

Since my half marathon in February, I have been having problems with my right knee.   I have mentioned it a few times on the blog, most recently as one of my concerns when I decided to start training for the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2011. (post here).

As I mentioned in my that post, “I am also a little worried about my right knee, which has been giving me problems since the Gasparilla Half Marathon in February.  While my knee does not hurt when I run, I often have an achy feeling that doesn’t seem to go away. ”

Well, something amazing happened while I was in Georgia and Ohio last week – my knee didn’t hurt AT ALL!   Plus, it was a really active vacation with white water rafting, running from bears :)   , and I completed a few training runs on my schedule, so it’s not because I wasn’t exercising.

It wasn’t until I got home and my knee started aching again that I realized it didn’t hurt the whole time I was away.  And the only difference I could come up with….I wasn’t sleeping on my mattrees that is at home – and old, and needs replaced.   I sleep on my right side, which means my right knee is on the bottom when I sleep.  The only thing I could come up with is that I was putting too much pressure on my knee and my mattress couldn’t support it.

As a test, for two night I didn’t sleep on that side, and magically my knee is feeling great!   That was all I needed to go out and buy a new mattress, which we had already been talking about anyway.

It arrived yesterday!!!   I am excited to go back to my usual position of “side sleeping” and hope that my knee continues feeling great.

Running Update

I am still sore from Saturday’s Crossfit Session, but I was determined to follow my training plan which called for a two mile run on Monday.  The soreness that was still in my legs reminded me of a brick workout, where my legs already feel tired and heavy.    Once I got going though, I didn’t really notice the soreness, so I am glad I stuck to my schedule.

I also tried something new yesterday…I wore my husband’s running shoes.  Yes, we wear the same size shoes :)    His running shoes are so lightweight compared to mine, so I have been wanting to try them.

I even had an official shoe weigh in.

They felt a little weird at first, but I really liked them.   The 2 ounce difference in weight felt like so much more.  My feet felt extra light with the lighter shoes.  Next time I am fit for running shoes, I am definitely going to look for something lighter.

This morning I woke up early to do a 4 mile run, and I am happy to report that it’s over and I am back home!    Since I had so much fun running at Clearwater Beach last Friday night, I decided to go there again this morning.   Somehow this morning it felt so much harder to run on the sand than it did the other night.  It took me a little longer than I wanted, since I took a short walking break a few times, but I am trying to get the miles in right now, and not worry too much about time.

Today’s Run:

  • Distance: 4 miles
  • Mile 1: 12:28
  • Mile 2: 12:42
  • Mile 3: 12:53
  • Mile 4: 13:08
  • Total Time: 51:12
  • Avg Heart Rate: 169 bpm
  • Max Heart Rate: 181 bpm

Crossfit Rebels

This has been a great, fun, and active weekend.  I love it!

Friday night my husband and I did an impromptu 5k at Clearwater Beach.   It was the last 5k in a series of 4, and now we wish we would have done all 4 of them.  It was very casual, with around 200 runners,  and it was a straight out and back along the beach.  The sand was nice and packed down, and it was just like running on the road or sidewalk.  At times I even forgot I was running on the sand.

I didn’t have a time goal in mind, and I fell into my normal pace of 11:30-12:00 minute miles.  I was able to run the whole distance with my only stop being the half way water stop.  I was excited!   I am trying to cut down on my walking breaks, so this was a great feeling.

I couldn’t find my spibelt before the race, and I didn’t want to hold my camera, so I didn’t get any race pictures :(

Now on to Crossfit…

Saturday morning, my husband and I went for a trial workout at a Crossfit gym that just opended in the area, called Crossfit Rebels (website coming soon, but here is their facebook page).  My husband knows one of the owners, Sam, and I was excited to finally meet her too.

I still have a lot to learn about Crossfit, but my general understanding is that it’s a combination of strength and conditioning training, all done with minimal equipment and coaches to help and encourage you.

Our trial workout started with a portion of the standard Crossfit warmup, and it was a workout in itself!  Sam and Ed, the owners (and coaches), were great about explaining the correct form for all the exercises, and they were very encouraging the whole time.    I didn’t write down all the exact reps, but the warmup included the following:

  • rowing machine
  • sit ups
  • a back exercise I don’t remember the name of
  • squats
  • chin-ups
  • push-ups

Next up in our workout was a combination of two exercises:

  • Doing squats while throwing a weighted ball against the wall
  • Burpees (demo video in case you don’t know what they are)

Here was the setup for the squats and wall ball.  When squatting, your butt has to touch a weighted ball that is sitting on the floor, and when throwing the other ball, it has to hit the X on the wall (the top row for me since I am tall!).

Once we practiced both exercises to make sure we were doing them right, our next challenge was to do 7 reps of each of these exercises, back-to-back, as many times as we could in 7 minutes.  7 minutes doesn’t seem to bad, right?  WRONG!  I was dying after about 1 minute, but Ed and Sam were great about pushing us to keep going.   In the end, I got about 4 reps of each exercise in the 7 minutes, using a 15 pound weighted ball, or maybe it was 10 pounds.  I don’t remember….but it felt heavy whatever it was!

Post 7-minute workout, we sat on the mats cooling off and drinking water.   Oh yea, I forgot to mention, the gym area is not air conditioned!!   There were a lot of fans and a good breeze from outside, but it was definitely hot.

Because the gym is just opening, not all of their services are available yet.  In the next few months, they will also hold nutrition and cooking seminars, called Rebel Health.  They have an awesome area set up.  I can’t wait to start attending!

I am considering adding Crossfit to my workout schedule, but I am not sure how it will mesh with marathon training.  I think the intensity of Crossfit would be a great supplement to my running, and I can probably remove at least one day of running from my schedule.

I am going to go back this week for a “real” workout to see what it’s like before I decide whether to join or not.  I may have to play with the running schedule as I go to see how it works.  I also like that in each class the workout is totally different.  It ads variety and I think it would help keep me engaged, and make sure I don’t get bored with the workouts.  They also marked a 1.6 mile running loop around the block, and some of the Crossfit workouts include running, which I like!

Here is the current schedule for classes, which works well for my schedule since I am not working.  I would have plenty of times to choose from!  If anyone local to Clearwater wants to check it out, let me know :)

Whew, what a start to the weekend!  I think I earned my rest day today!
