Swag Bag!

Today I got to pick up my Spirit of Columbus swag bag…

The race is on Sunday!! I don’t have a relay partner so I am just running the first 1/2 of the half marathon which is 6.55 miles. I am estimating it will take me about 70 minutes to complete. My running time has been slower than usual lately, but as I said before, this is just a fun run!!

I don’t run the races for the goodie bags, but I have to say this one was a failure. The best part were the glasses which are nice thick pint glasses. The shirt is OK, but really not my choice of colors and the rest of the bag was filled with coupons that had nothing to do with running. I at least like the coupons when they are relevant!! Last year this race ran out of water (I ran the whole thing with out water until mile 8!) so I hope it improves!!

How do you rate your running swag? Does it help you determine which races to run? So far I think the Disney Princess 1/2 marathon swag was the best…not to mention the princess medal!

To get ready I ran this morning and am going to power yoga to stretch out tomorrow. I am getting excited!!

Performance!

Performance = Ability x Support x Effort and boy have I needed to perform this week! After a successful weekend of volunteering and LOTS of studying, I conquered the first part of the week with more studying, lots of work related presentations and deadlines and 2 finals! Sigh…

Here’s how I got through (and there are still 2 more days left in the week work week!)

Ability - Know your ability before you start your challenge. Whether it be a crazy week, test, marathon or just a simple walk, knowing where you stand helps you set baseline expectations.

Support - Line up your team. For me its my family and friends. My husband takes over when I am swamped like this and we learn to say no to additional commitments. I did manage to fit in some fun time with friends to relax on Saturday night to go see Wicked which was a nice mental break. Its sad that you have to schedule those sometimes, but they are productive too! (btw, LOVED Wicked!!)

Effort - This one is up to you, but if you put in the right amount of effort you will perform with the other factors in line. I knew I had a set amount of time so study and work so I had to really focus during those timeframes (i.e. no blogging). Tonight I feel great and know that I did my best and can celebrate with no regret!!

Some easier tips may also be to just try to stay on the wagon. By that I mean, don’t go crazy with junk food, (ice cream and studying is my weakness), try to fit in some workouts and get a good nights sleep. Of course I have weaknesses… ate a BIG scoop of ice cream while studying on Monday and missed two of my runs, but I pushed through!

What are your performance factors?

Oddly, one of the biggest motivators this week was my Lululemon bag. I forgot my lunch bag one day and made use of one sitting around…

My go to foods in a hurry always include Kashi Frozen meals and for a special treat, Vitamuffins! These are great for when you need something healthy on the go.

What are your stable on the go items? My bag continued to inspire me throughout the day. Maybe it contributed to on overall successful performance!! Breathe deeply and press on! Until tomorrow…

Pelotonia – Part II

Yesterday we voluntered at the 2nd Annual Pelotonia Race. (Part 1). Thankfully it was overcast and not 100 degrees! I can’t imagine riding 100 miles in that heat. Riders could ride 23, 53, 100 or 180. A lot of companies had sponsored teams. I got a cool blue bikers jersey from mine!

After the token picture, I put on my volunteer jersey and got to work!

We had an entire parking lot full of bikes! After each rider finished they loaded their bike on a semi, which drove back to the starting point. The riders were bused back separately and then they picked up their bikes which we unloaded. I bet in our 4 hour shift we unloaded about 10 semi’s worth of bikes! There are some COOL bikes out there too. I have my eye on a purple Trek these days.

Any bikers out there? I need some tips for finding a good bike!

Overall volunteering was a great experience. It was not only inspiration to stay fit and healthy, but for a great cause. The husband and I got to spend some time together and even saw some local celebrities!

It really helped me keep in perspective what is important especially given all the work and school demands lately. Everyone we worked with was so friendly and very hard working. The volunteers ranged from all ages.  My favorite was an older couple who had volunteered 2 days in a row. They personally handed every bike to the riders as they picked them up and thanked them for participating. I hope people take a moment to appreciate people like that and the time they are donating. It really made for a great day!
